Start In Recruitment

Why Recruitment

So you’re thinking about recruitment? Maybe you know someone who has been in agency recruitment or you simply saw an ad that matched your personality and applied? Either way you’re here and curious. That’s a great start.

Asking questions and being self-aware are two qualities that will help you succeed in recruitment, so with that here are a few questions that you should ask yourself (they’ll also no doubt come up in your interview!)

Will my background help me in Recruitment?

Whilst recruitment is a stimulating role because it has so many moving parts, certain roles in someone’s past definitely help . Recruitment at it’s core is a strategic sales role, it’s not HR and it’s in no way fluffy. The word “sales” can be misconstrued and in my opinion covers to many roles, so I’ll break it down. We love sales people in recruitment because they have the following characteristic:

They are resilient and have faced rejection and disappointment in their previous work so know how to get on with the role and not let it affect their mindset.

They sell strategically. If you have sold things by forcing people to buy, recruitment won’t be for you. People make their own decisions when it’s their career so recruitment consultants need to influence processes more. Asking good questions, listening providing good customer service and giving market insight all help recruiters build trust and therefore influence decisions.

They have a strong work ethic due to; being money motivated, a competitive nature, career ambition or any number of reasons

They love talking with people, closing deals and bettering their lives

Why do you want to get into recruitment?

If you’re just after a job you won’t be hired at a recruitment agency. Recruitment agencies in Australia invest a significant amount of money in hiring, training, software and rent when someone new starts and do this because they see the potential in them.

At the same time recruitment takes a while to learn, especially processes and unpredictable human nature. Combine that with it being a network orientated role the big bucks don’t start rolling in until year 3.

So you want to make sure that it’s a career change that you are passionate about and not just a job until your next holiday.
The main reasons 90% of people go into recruitment can be summarized below:

To make money (there’s no shame in this being your motivation, if it truly is don’t be afraid to tell your interviewer)

Develop their professional career and get the experience to move into the corporate world. Many people do 3-5 years in recruitment. Make great money and then move into a number of professional industries within their sector.

Helping people find their dream role. There is honestly no better feeling in the world then calling someone and telling them they got accepted for their dream role. Trust me.

You’re an entrepreneur at heart and like doing a bit of everything. Recruitment is a combination of sales, marketing, business development, account management, data analytics, graphic design and whatever you can think of.

Know your why

To blatantly rip of Simon Sinek, knowing your why is the most important thing when thinking of getting into recruitment. If you know WHY you want to get into recruitment AND your main motivations, it will help us find the perfect agency for you.

Maybe you just want to do sales and makes crazy money and don’t mind long hours due to that. There’s an agency for that.

Maybe you want your role to be beneficial to society? Hello medical recruitment!

Maybe you’re an ex plumber with a few years sales on top and you think you’d love to continue in that space but as a recruiter. Easy

You get my point. Know you’re why and we’ll be able to find you the perfect role.
